Suspect in custody in fatal shooting of San Diego cop

San Diego police officials said Friday that a suspect was in custody in connection with a shooting at a routine police stop late Thursday that left one officer dead and one wounded.

The dead officer was identified by the San Diego Union-Tribune as Jonathan "J.D." DeGuzman, 43.

San Diego police said on Twitter that Police Chief Shirley Zimmerman visited the hospital and that the injured officer, identified by the Union-Tribune as Wade Irwin, 32, DeGuzman's partner, was out of surgery. "He is expected to survive!" the post said.

The suspect was identified as Jesse Michael Gomez, 52, the Union-Tribune reported.

At an afternoon news conference, Zimmerman said it was "too early to tell" if the shooting erupted spontaneously or was an ambush. She said it was also unclear whether the officers, who were part of a gang suppression unit, were making a traffic stop or confronting a pedestrian.

Regardless, the shooting broke out shortly after police radioed they were making the stop. Zimmerman said an emergency call came only seconds later, prompting additional officers to swarm the scene.

Police departments nationwide have been on high alert following the killing of five police officers in Dallas and three in Baton Rouge, La., earlier this month.

A suspect, described as a Hispanic man, was shot and wounded in the exchange that erupted within seconds.

DeGuzman was a 16-year veteran of the police force.

“Last night we lost one of San Diego’s finest,” San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said in a statement. “We grieve for our fallen officer and stand with his family during this very difficult time. We also pray for the second officer shot last night as he recovers from surgery."

Zimmerman told reporters police were looking for a second suspect in the incident in a southeast San Diego neighborhood. Police warned residents to remain in their homes as authorities conducted an active search.

Late Friday morning, a SWAT team surrounded a house where a second possible suspect was believed to be holed up. Officers used a bullhorn to try to convince the man to surrender, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
