Coach Tyronn Lue, Cavaliers agree to five-year, $35M extension
The Cleveland Cavaliers and coach Tyronn Lue have agreed on a five-year contract extension worth $35 million, two people with knowledge of the negotiations told USA TODAY Sports' Jeff Zillgitt.
They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been announced.
Lue, who started out in Cleveland as an associate head coach prior to the 2014-15 season, took over the Cavs' head-coaching duties midway through last season after the team fired David Blatt. He led the Cavs to a 27-14 regular season record, a 16-5 mark in the postseason, and — most importantly — the franchise's first NBA championship.
Before joining the Cavs, he was an assistant with the Boston Celtics (2011-13) and the Los Angeles Clippers (2013-14) under Doc Rivers. This is his first head-coaching job.
The Vertical was the first to report the agreement.
