This .40 caliber Glock-22 handgun was stolen July 10, 2016, from an FBI agent's SUV in the District of Columbia.

WASHINGTON — The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for a handgun, a rifle and other equipment stolen from an agent's vehicle earlier this month.

All of the items were in a lock box, taken between midnight and 2 a.m. July 10 from a Ford Expedition parked in the city's Northeast quadrant, FBI officials said.

The items inside the black TruckVault gun lock box:

  • Glock-22 handgun .40 caliber, serial no. RYE448
  • Rock River Arms rifle, LAR-15, serial no. CM156996
  • Motorola radio APX-7000, serial no. 655CLT044
  • Holster for Glock-22 handgun
  • ASP collapsible baton
  • Oleoresin capsicum spray
  • Two boxes of .40 caliber ammunition
  • Hearing and eye protective gear

The SUV was locked, and someone smashed its rear passenger window to grab the lock box; the agent reported the theft to police at about 7:50 a.m. ET, The Washington Post reported. District of Columbia police investigators are examining surveillance video in the area.

Researchers have many unanswered questions on guns

In May, an FBI agent in San Francisco had his handgun, badge and credentials stolen from his vehicle. The .40 caliber Glock 27 was missing for two days before surveillance video in the area led investigators to a home where they found the gun and arrested at least one person, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Agents fall prey to thefts from vehicles a few times a year, including these incidents that were made public:

On Jan. 29, two .40 caliber Glocks and a .45 caliber handgun were stolen from an FBI vehicle parked in a residential neighborhood in Benicia, a San Francisco suburb.

On Sept. 29, 2014, a Remington 870 shotgun and Colt M-4LE rifle were stolen from an agent's vehicle in Waxhaw, N.C., a Charlotte suburb.

On Aug. 5, 2013, a Colt M-16 rifle and a Remington 870 shotgun were stolen from an agent's vehicle in Charlotte.

In the 2013 case, an FBI press release noted that an agent who was a theft victim was part of a special-response team and authorized to store weapons in his vehicle.
