Marlins acquire starters Andrew Cashner, Colin Rea from Padres

USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins -- currently tied for the second wild-card spot in the National League -- added depth to their rotation by acquiring two starters.

In seven major league seasons, Andrew Cashner has a 30-49 record with a 3.72 ERA.

The Marlins acquired right-handers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea and Tayron Guerrero from the San Diego Padres on Friday morning.

In exchange, the Padres received right-hander Jarred Cosart, injured reliever Carter Capps, who underwent Tommy John earlier this year, minor league prospect first baseman Josh Naylor and pitcher Luis Castillo.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers were also interested in Cashner, who becomes a free agent after the season.

Cashner, 29, started Tuesday against the Blue Jays, pitching six innings and giving up four hits and three earned runs en route to a no decision.

He is 4-7 this season with a 4.76 ERA and 7.6 strikeouts per nine. Because of two stints in the disabled list, he's been limited to 79 1/3 innings.

In seven major league seasons -- two with the Chicago Cubs and the past five with the Padres -- he is 30-49 record with a 3.72 ERA.

Rea, 26, is under club control until 2022. He is 5-5 with a 4.98 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings.

The Padres have been busy as the Aug. 1 trade deadline nears. On Tuesday, they traded outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. to the Blue Jays for minor league pitcher Hansel Rodriguez.

Tyson Ross, who has been on the disabled list since his Opening Day start, is the only pitcher remaining from the projected starting rotation to open the season. Earlier this month, James Shields was traded to the Chicago White Sox and Drew Pomeranz was sent to the Boston Red Sox. The club also traded closer Fernando Rodney to the Marlins.

"Quite frankly, at this point in time, it's not like we've broken up a championship club," Padres GM A.J. Preller said after trading Upton Jr. "We haven't gotten to where we want to get to, and we're going to look at some other guys and see if they can get us there."
