No one-week wonder, Rockies' Trevor Story leads NL in homers after 456-foot moonshot

Rookie Rockies shortstop Trevor Story drew national attention in April by hitting an incredible seven home runs in his first six Major League games. But Story hardly stopped there: The 23-year-old hit his National League-leading 27th home run on Sunday in triumphant fashion on a 456-foot bomb at Coors Field:

The Rockies play their home games in mile-high altitude, yes, but hitting 27 homers in 91 games as a 23-year-old rookie shortstop would be impressive even if they played in a Little League park built on the surface of the moon.

Here’s the wacky part: Even as a shortstop leading the National League in home runs, Story would be no safe bet to win the circuit’s Rookie of the Year honors if the season ended today. He has outslugged but not necessarily outperformed a pair of other NL shortstops in their first full seasons: The Dodgers’ Corey Seager and the Cardinals’ Aledmys Diaz.

This seems an exceptionally good time for young shortstops, with the best set of 25-and-under superstars at the position since Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Nomar Garciaparra all came up in the late 1990s.

In addition to the three NL rookies mentioned above, the Major League’s shortstop ranks boast a pair of potential MVP candidates — The Indians’ defensively gifted Francisco Lindor and the Orioles’ Manny Machado (who also plays third) — plus reigning AL Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa of the Astros, the Red Sox’ Xander Bogaerts, and (to a lesser extent, to date) the Cubs’ highly touted Addison Russell.
