5 sports that the U.S. has never medaled in at the Summer Olympics

Over 26 Summer Olympics, the United States has 2.399 medals, with 976 gold. With that many medals, you would think the U.S. has a medal in every sport the Olympics will offer in 2016, but it doesn’t. No American team or athlete has a medal in these five sports.

The U.S has a strong young team here, but will have a tough time beating the experienced teams from India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

2. Handball

Neither the U.S. men or women qualified in handball, so the medal drought will continue.

3. Rhythmic gymnastics

Of the five sports listed here, this is the sport with the best shot at breaking through for a U.S. medal. Laura Zeng won five golds at the Pan-American Games, but will still have to defeat strong challengers from Russia and Ukraine.

4. Table tennis

Introduced to the Olympics in 1988, the vast majority of golds have been won by China. Though the U.S. has some young up-and-comers, it’s not likely they will come away from Rio with medals.

5. Trampoline

An Olympic sport since 2000, China and Russia have the majority of medals. The best American medal shot, Charlotte Drury, injured her foot just before the Olympic trials.
