The Democratic National Convention kicked off with a star-studded evening, bringing speeches from Demi Lovato, Sarah Silverman, and Eva Longoria, performances by Boyz II Men and Paul Simon, and other famous faces showing up left and right.

Revisit Day 1's biggest celebrity highlights.

1. Boys II Men get the party started

The DNC festivities kicked off with a surprise appearance by hometown heroes Boyz II Men.

The legendary R&B group, founded in Philly, took the stage as the convention's first performers, playing their 1991 hit Motownphilly.

2. An all-star selfie

Consider this the DNC version of Ellen DeGeneres' Internet-breaking Oscars selfie.

Actor Kendrick Sampson packed Rosario Dawson, Susan Sarandon, Shailene Woodley and Danny Glover into a picture at instagram's mini Oval Office behind the scenes of the convention.

"I love these heart and soul warriors," he wrote in the caption. "Champions in the fight for love and equal rights. #DNCinPHL"

3. Alicia Keys talks Trump vs. Hillary

In between talking mass incarceration at the #POLITICOHub's opening night event, Alicia Keys shared strong words for both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

She called on the presumptive Democratic candidate to apologize for her husband Bill Clinton's policies of mass incarceration he enacted when he was president in the 1990s.

And voiced her skepticism about Trump's claims that crime rates are rising.

4. Demi Lovato gets real

Demi Lovato has an intimate connection to Hillary Clinton's calls for mental health awareness and support.

“Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness," she told the DNC crowd during her speech, referring to her struggles with bipolar disorder she's spoken about in the past. "But I am lucky. I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility."

Demi Lovato performs on the first day of the Democratic National Convention.

"Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, whether they fear the stigma or cannot afford treatment," she continued.  "This is not about politics, its simply the right thing to do."

The singer followed her speech with an emotional performance of her song Confident.

5. Sarah Silverman calls foul on #BernieorBust

Previously a vocal Bernie Sanders supporter, the comedian joined Sen. Al Franken onstage to urge convention-goers feeling the Bern to support Hillary Clinton.

"Hillary is our Democratic nominee and I will proudly vote for her," she said, before sending a message to the #BernieorBust folks in the crowd.

"Can I just say to the "Bernie or bust" people, you're being ridiculous," she said, to a mix of cheers and jeers from the crowd.

6. With Paul Simon, a moment of unity

If there's one thing that can bring feuding Bernie and Hillary supporters together, it's Bridge Over Troubled Water.

The crowd had barely settled down after Silverman's rabble-rousing speech when Paul Simon came out, leading a rendition of his beloved song, teeing up inspiring speeches from Cory Booker and Michelle Obama.

7. Eva Longoria shares her story

In her indictment of Donald Trump and his anti-immigrant rhetoric, Longoria got personal.

“I’m a ninth generation American from a small town in South Texas," she told the crowd. "And if you know your history, Texas used to be part of Mexico. My family never crossed a border. The border crossed us.”

“When Donald Trump calls us criminals and rapists, he is insulting American families,” the actress continued. “My father isn’t a criminal or a rapist. In fact, he’s a United States veteran.”
