Twitter continues livestreaming push with MLB, NHL games

Live MLB and NHL games are coming to Twitter.

July 24: Orioles' Nolan Reimold celebrates with teammates after his two-run walk-off homer against the Indians.

Following last week's announcement that the social network would be partnering with the NBA on two live-streaming shows, the social network announced on Monday that it has reached agreements with MLB's Advanced Media unit to stream games from the other two major U.S. sports leagues.

MLB Advanced Media handles both leagues' TV and digital operations.

The deal will bring live MLB and NHL games to the social network once a week in addition to a nightly, SportsCenter-like highlight show called The Rally from 120 Sports in September. The show will run seven nights a week from 9-11 p.m. ET and will feature live video, live look-ins at games in progress and "reaction to the top trending stories" of the night, according to 120 Sports.

No dates were announced for exactly when Twitter will begin live-streaming games, though games from the current MLB season and upcoming NHL season are expected to be included once the service starts streaming early this fall.

As with Twitter's other sports streaming deals, the games will be available for free to users regardless of whether they are logged into Twitter. Similar to other sports broadcasts, games will be subject to local blackout rules, meaning they won't be available in the team's home markets or for nationally televised games.

The deal is yet another boost to the company's growing streaming ambitions, giving Twitter a connection to each of the four largest U.S. sports leagues and live games from three of them. In April Twitter purchased the rights to stream Thursday night NFL games this fall.
