Five 49ers who will improve their Madden 19 rating this season

The Madden video game has long been an institution among NFL fans and players alike. The game’s developers over at EA Sports do a good job of creating a buzz and conversation surrounding the game’s annual release in August by announcing players’ ratings beforehand.

The 49ers’ ratings are out and it looks like there isn’t much to quibble with. Richard Sherman and Joe Staley are the team’s top-rated players on either side of the ball with 90 ratings.

San Francisco has a few players looking to improve significantly this season — but that expected improvement hasn’t been reflected in the ratings just yet. Let’s take a look at five 49ers that could see their Madden 19 rating take a jump in 2018.

DeForest Buckner, DT

Current rating: 86
Positional ranking: 10

Buckner being the game’s 10th-ranked defensive tackle is surprising. He finished fifth among interior defenders with 52 quarterback pressures last season, according to Pro Football Focus, while finishing with the most combined hits and sacks (23). However, Buckner was credited with just three sacks on the season, which is likely the biggest factor in where he ranks among his position. If Buckner can convert his pressure rate into more sacks, expect the third-year pro to hear his name mentioned among the league’s elite defensive tackles more often.
