Did Tiger Woods ever give us a thrill?

He made eight birdies Sunday at Bellerive and got within one of the lead three times as he charged at his 15th major title. He would come up just short, though, as Brooks Koepka was too impressive.

Still … Bravo, Tiger.

Hole No. 18: Par 4, 450 yards

OFF THE TEE (6:29 p.m. ET): This drive is roped down the middle.  Great drive. But it’s probably too late.

APPROACH SHOT (6:35 p.m. ET): A sand wedge from 125 yards, and this one finishes 20 feet left of the pin. That’s OK. Even if he makes that putt, he won’t win. But what a battle.

ON THE GREEN (6:39 p.m. ET): Buries it! What a great finish, but that will likely be a couple short. (UPDATE: It ends up being two short, but Tiger finishes solo second!)

TIGER ON THE DAY: 6-under 64 (14 under overall, solo second)

Hole No. 17: Par 5: 597 yards

OFF THE TEE (6:09 p.m. ET): And that is the killer right there. A huge high cut that fades right at the hazard right. It may’ve gone in, we’re not sure. Hopefully it finishes right of the hazard, but that’s wishful thinking. We’ll see.

SECOND SHOT (6:13 p.m. ET): Tiger got pretty freaking lucky. That ends up in the hazard but not in the water portion. That ball is plugged down, but he is able to play that and advances it about 100 yards down the fairway. Should have about 150-ish in. So birdie is not out of the question. But Koepka just moved to 15 under. Tiger is two back. Needs birdie-birdie finish probably to have a chance.

THIRD SHOT (6:16 p.m. ET): This one was a little longer than we thought. Hits a 5-iron that misses just left and short. That ends up in the left greenside bunker, and Tiger’s hopes are probably dead. He can get that up and down for par. But Koepka has a 5-footer for birdie at No. 16. If that drops, Tiger is three back and Koepka still has that par 5 to play.

AROUND THE GREEN (6:22 p.m. ET): That is mediocre. This one goes 10 feet by. He’ll have that for par. That’s to stay within three after Koepka indeed birdies behind.

ON THE GREEN (6:25 p.m. ET): Drain-o. Great putt and par. He’s technically not dead, but basically Tiger needs to hole out for eagle at 18 and then hope Koepka falls apart. So the odds are 1-in-10,000 at this point.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under through 17 (13 under overall, solo third)

Hole No. 16: Par 3, 248 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:58 p.m. ET): Tiger walked back after hitting that one, and that is a nice beautiful cut that finishes 20 feet right and under the hole. That is perfectly executed on this long hole. He will have that decent look to tie the lead.

ON THE GREEN (6:05 p.m. ET): That putt was no good, always short and left. But that’s an easy tap-in par on a tough hole. Man that would’ve been elctric if he could’ve tied the lead there.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under through 16 (13 under overall, solo third)

Hole No. 15: Par 4, 496 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:45 p.m. ET): That driver is low and straight and gets a twirl. A beautiful low cut off the bunker that finds the center of the fairway some 300+ down there. He’s two back of Koepka and Scott. With the way those guys are playing, Tiger may want to think about three late birdies, get in at 15 under and see what happens.

APPROACH SHOT (5:50 p.m. ET): This is a defining approach from 164 yards. … YES! YES! YES! He lands that 4 feet under the hole, it hops forward and finishes a foot under the cup. That is a kick-in birdie and he will move back within one. This is just fantastic.

ON THE GREEN (5:53 p.m. ET): He indeed taps in. He’s one back again!!

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under through 15 (13 under overall, solo third)

Hole No. 14: Par 4, 413 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:31 p.m. ET): And the misses return. He pushes this iron into the right rough and that was an AWFUL time for that. Well, we just hope the lie is good.

APPROACH SHOT (5:35 p.m. ET): That was an awful lie. And all Tiger can do is try to hack this to the right front of the green. He does pretty well as this 9-iron finishes a few yards right of the green in the fairway. That’ll leave about a 25-yard pitch with tons of green to work with. A pretty simple pitch.

AROUND THE GREEN (5:39 p.m. ET): That was poor. It checks up quickly and that ball stops a good 12 feet short of the cup. That left for par.

ON THE GREEN (5:42 p.m. ET): SO, SO UNFAIR. That putt was dropping in the right-center but caught a huge part of the right lip and lipped out. That was cruel and undeserved. Terrible time for a bogey, and he falls two back.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under through 14 (12 under overall, solo third)

Hole No. 13: Par 3, 188 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:23 p.m. ET): This is awesome! Tiger drills an 8-iron that lands 25 feet below the flag and takes a slope and finishes 10 feet short of the cup. That will be an excellent birdie chance. That would get him within one.

ON THE GREEN (5:29 p.m. ET): Putter raise alert!! Back-to-back birdies as Tiger drizzles that quick one in. He is ONE back.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under through 13 (13 under overall, solo second)

Hole No. 12: Par 4, 457 yards

OFF THE TEE (5:02 p.m. ET): Another driver … and it’s like the front nine never happened! He blasts this about 315 yards down the right side of the fairway. Perfect.

APPROACH SHOT (5:08 p.m. ET): A pitching wedge from 140 yards, and that is a beauty. It lands and spins 5-6 feet right of the flag. EXCELLENT birdie chance.

ON THE GREEN (5:20 p.m. ET): YES! Tiger gets that to drop in the right side after a long wait due to Gary Woodland damaging the cup on the approach. Great, great birdie. He needed it. Now two back and T-2.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under through 12 (12 under overall, T-2)

Hole No. 11: Par 4, 294 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:50 p.m. ET): We’ve come to a drivable par 4, but Tiger takes iron off the tree. Probably smart with how he’s driving it and a pond right. That iron works out well, as he hits this one left-center of the fairway. He’ll have a wedge left to a back pin.

APPROACH SHOT (4:54 p.m. ET): That was very disappointing from 82 yards. He flies that 20 feet beyond the pin, and it doesn’t spin back. So he’ll have 20 feet above the hole for birdie. Not what you want from there.

ON THE GREEN (4:58 p.m. ET): OH NO! That one from 27 feet was dead on-line but comes up one revolution short. We mean one, that ball was right on the front edge and Tiger actually waited a few seconds hoping it would drop after a slight delay. It doesn’t and he settles for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under through 11 (11 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 10: Par 4, 515 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:34 p.m. ET): This is driver … and he finally hits a fairway!!! That is ideal down the left-center about 305. Finally. If he drives it like that on the back nine, he has a terrific chance. He’s currently two back after Koepka birdies the eighth.

APPROACH SHOT (4:41 p.m. ET): That drive was 320 and gives Tiger just 194 yards in on this monster. So his first approach from the fairway today … that 8-iron is just OK. It’s safe some 30 feet left of the cup. Not his best, but that’s fine. Should be a two-putt par.

ON THE GREEN (4:45 p.m. ET): OK, not bad. He lags that about 2 feet short of the cup. He taps in for a two-putt par. But he does fall three back after a Koepka birdie. He’s also now T-4 after Thomas Pieters birdies 16 to move to 12 under.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under through 10 (11 under overall, T-4)

Hole No. 9: Par 4, 439 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:18 p.m. ET): And Tiger goes the entire front nine without hitting a fairway! Pulls this iron way left and it actually flirts with OB but ends up in bounds. It finishes right on the inside portion of the cart path, where he might play it from as relief takes him toward trees and OB. This is unbelievable.

Tiger has fallen out of T-2, by the way, as Thomas birdies 10 to move to 11 under.

APPROACH SHOT (4:24 p.m. ET): Tiger actually gets relief toward the right and drops in a matted lie. He changes his shirt, too. And this is just insane. He hits a huge draw from 175 yards and this ends up 12 feet right of the hole. WOW!!! He has a great chance for birdie to go out in 3-under 32 and move within one. Without hitting a single fairway on the front nine. Unreal.

ON THE GREEN (4:29 p.m. ET): OH MY HOLY LORD. He drops that in the right side of the cup and gives it a big fist pump. Tiger just went out in 3-under 32 without hitting a fairway. He is ONE back and T-2.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under through 9 (11 under overall, T-2)

Hole No. 8: Par 5, 594 yards

OFF THE TEE (4:02 p.m. ET): OK, driver here … just awful. That is a terrible pull left and Tiger hates it right away. It bounds into the crowd and goes forward and finishes in a decent lie in left rough. But almost certainly a lay up from there. The driver woes continue.

APPROACH SHOT (4:09 p.m. ET): Wow, Tiger actually had a corridor to go for this green. He takes out fairway wood from a great matted down lie, and this one lands about 30 yards short of the green and bounds into a front-right greenside bunker. That’s a great result after that drive. Tricky bunker shot, short-sided a bit. But that is terrific after that drive.

AROUND THE GREEN (4:12 p.m. ET): And that is a beauty! He lands that 5 feet short of that cup and it hops forward and rolls a foot away from the cup. That will be a kick-in birdie!

ON THE GREEN (4:15 p.m. ET): He taps in. Tiger hasn’t hit a fairway and is -2 on the day. That birdie actually keeps him within two as Koepka birdies the seventh. But Tiger is back to T-2.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under through 8 (10 under overall, T-2)

Hole No. 7: Par 4, 399 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:49 p.m. ET): That’s an iron for Tiger of the tee and that is terrible. He flails that one out to the right and this misses in the right rough. He’s back a bit, too. Tiger has been awful off the tee today. He is 0/5 on fairways. Yeah, tough to see him winning if that continues.

APPROACH SHOT (3:54 p.m. ET): Horrible lie from inside 160 yards and that actually ends up OK. It lands on the green a bit past hole-high and bounces just over the green in rough. Lie is good over there and he has plenty of green to work with. That up and down isn’t tough. Tiger is back within two, by the way, after a Koepka bogey.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:57 p.m. ET): OK, we were wrong. The lie was bad. But Tiger plays a nifty shot that finishes 4 feet left of the cup. That’s pretty nice, and this would be a nice par save with a par 5 upcoming.

ON THE GREEN (3:59 p.m. ET): That drops right in. Good par right there. Man, he has done his absolute best to go par-par-bogey-par in this stretch. He NEEDS to start hitting fairways. A par 5 is coming, and fairway here would be huge.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 7 (9 under overall, T-3)

Hole No. 6: Par 3, 223 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:39 p.m. ET): Well, Tiger is making himself work. He takes 4-iron here and flushes this 15 feet left of the pin, but it carries to the back fringe, and hits a downslope and caroms into a back bunker. That may be on a tiny downslope, too. Some green to work with to that pin, but water is on the other side. This could be his most difficult up and down yet.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:44 p.m. ET): That was no good. Tiger got too much ball and this lands too far on the green and races to the front fringe. That’ll be an 18-footer for par from the front fringe. That would be a huge putt if he could get it.

ON THE GREEN (3:46 p.m. ET): That bobbled early, and Tiger misses just to the right. He taps in from there for bogey. That’s not a fun bogey, but that is a really tough hole. If that’s his only bogey today, he’s fine.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 6 (9 under overall, T-3)

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 470 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:24 p.m. ET): Another driver and this is another bad miss right. This one only carries 270 yards as it bounds into the crowd. That will more than likely be in matted down stuff. So if he has an angle, he may get away with that. But it’ll be a miracle for him to win today if he’s hitting the driver like that all day.

APPROACH SHOT (3:31 p.m. ET): Tiger ended up in a matted down lie, the good. He had to hit a huge draw over trees after clearing out the gallery to get to the green, the tough. And from 184 yards with a 9-iron … this comes up short, right in the rough. That seemed like a lot of carry with that club. But that’s not awful, a little tricky up and down from over there, but not too tough.

AROUND THE GREEN (3:35 p.m. ET): A great lie over there, and he plays a beautiful chip and run that lands 15 feet short of the cup and finishes 18 inches left of it. That will be a nice tap-in par.

ON THE GREEN (3:37 p.m. ET): Tiger indeed taps in. He actually falls to solo third after JT birdies to move to 11 under. But Koepka bogeys, meaning Tiger’s within two.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under through 5 (10 under overall, solo third)

Hole No. 4: Par 4, 527 yards

OFF THE TEE (3:07 p.m. ET): That is no good with the driver. He finds the far fairway bunker right here. And that is a deep bunker over there, not sure he can reach the green from that spot.

Tiger is now three back after a Koepka birdie at the first. But a Scott bogey does have Tiger solo second at 10 under.

SECOND SHOT (3:12 p.m. ET): And Tiger took 7-iron out of there from way back with the lip in front and got this to finish back in the fairway well down there. Probably a 50-ish yard pitch for his third. Good recovery after a bad drive missed in the wrong place.

THIRD SHOT (3:16 p.m. ET): This one from 64 yards … and that one is pretty. Lands it about 10 feet past the hole and spins it 4-5 feet beyond the hole. That leaves a testy, tricky par putt. But considering where he was off the tee, that’s a good par look.

ON THE GREEN (3:21 p.m. ET): And he trickles that in. Great, great par. HUGE. JT has birdied behind to tie him for second, but that little matters. That putt was needed. He keeps his early momentum.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under through 4 (10 under overall, T-2)

Hole No. 3: Par 3, 154 yards

OFF THE TEE (3 p.m. ET): This is not happening. That 9-iron lands 6 inches left of the flag, bounces forward and spins back within 2 feet. This is going to be another birdie. Oh wow, people. This is exciting.

ON THE GREEN (3:05 p.m. ET): Yep, he cleans up. That is back-to-back birdies. Tiger is two back and T-2. Breathe, people.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under through 3 (10 under overall, T-2)

Hole No. 2: Par 4, 405 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:48 p.m. ET): Another little pull with the iron and this one flirts with the water but lands a few yards right of it and holds up on the edge of the intermediate cut. So he’s just fine, but that was scary for a second. That pull with the iron off the tee is something to look out for today.

APPROACH SHOT (2:52 p.m. ET): From 114 yards, this is awkward a little above his feet … But, OH. BABY. He lands this on the front edge of the green just over the water, it spins about 15 feet forward and spins back about 3-4 feet right and just beyond the hole. Amazing birdie look upcoming.

ON THE GREEN (2:57 p.m. ET): GOT IT! That is an early birdie and Tiger is now just three back!

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 2 (9 under overall, T-3)

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 422 yards

OFF THE TEE (2:36 p.m. ET): Here. We. Go. Iron off the tee and this one is a pull dumped into a fairway bunker. Well not ideal, but he should have a clean lie there. So not all bad.

APPROACH SHOT (2:41 p.m. ET): Right over the flag. Tiger flies a pitching wedge from 148 yards 7 feet past the hole and it basically sticks there. We are in business with a great look at an opening birdie.

ON THE GREEN (2:46 p.m. ET): That was cruel. Tiger had that right on-line and somehow that left-to-righter turns left at the last second, trickles over the left lip and lips out. That was agonizing, but the good news is he hit a good putt. Opening par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 1 (8 under overall, T-8)
