Week of terror underscores a 'desperate' Islamic State

Three cities in separate countries hit by suspected Islamic State terrorists in the past week dealt a tumultuous blow to safety in those regions, heightening fears of the militants' capabilities and where they could strike next. The reign of terror included Sunday's massive suicide bombing in Baghdad that killed more than 140 people, the weekend hostage-taking at a restaurant in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka that left 22 dead and Tuesday's bombing at the Istanbul airport that killed 44. On Monday, a series of bombings across Saudi Arabia brought death and fear to the Sunni nation as the holy month of Ramadan edged closer to a violent conclusion across the region. If you feel like you have "terrorism fatigue," you're not alone.

Kevin Durant shocks NBA world

Kevin Durant has agreed to sign with the Golden State Warriors, he announced Monday. The contract will be a 2-year, $54 million deal, with player option for second year, according to a person familiar with the deal. Durant, the former MVP and seven-time All-Star during his first nine seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, took a deliberate approach to his free agency. The balance of power in the NBA remained in the Western Conference with his stunning decision.

EgyptAir Flight 804 victims' remains recovered

Remains of passengers and crew aboard doomed EgyptAir Flight 804 discovered beneath the Mediterranean Sea have been recovered. The Cairo-bound Airbus 320 crashed May 19 more than three hours after departing from Paris, killing all 66 people on board. The bodies were found at a depth of around 9,800 feet in and around the plane. The flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recording also have been recovered.

Author, Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel dies at 87

Elie Wiesel, who made Holocaust education his mission in life after surviving the Auschwitz and Buchenwald death camps, died Saturday. The Nobel Peace Prize winner and author of Night was 87. President Obama called Wiesel "one of the great moral voices of our time, and in many ways, the conscience of the world," in a statement Saturday. Friends and family gathered to memorialize him Sunday at a private service in a Manhattan synagogue, saying goodbye to one of the last firsthand witnesses to the Nazi atrocities of the Holocaust.

FBI agents interview Hillary Clinton

FBI agents interviewed Hillary Clinton for about 3½ hours Saturday morning at their headquarters in Washington, steering the probe into her private email server closer to an expected conclusion in coming weeks. Clinton, who left office as Secretary of State in February 2013, used a private email and server hosted at her home in New York — inconsistent with long-established policies governing all federal agencies. After being interviewed, Clinton went to see Broadway's Hamilton.

NYPD: Central Park blast wasn't terror-related

An explosion in Central Park this weekend that severely injured a Virginia man appears unrelated to terror and should not discourage participation in Independence Day fireworks and other events across the city, authorities stressed Monday. Detective Ahmed Nasser told USA TODAY that physicians were forced to amputate Connor Golden's left leg below the knee after the 18-year-old college student stepped on a homemade firework or other explosive while rock climbing Sunday.
