Fat Joe had no idea his Anthony Mason, Notorious B.I.G. revelation was a secret

Rapper Fat Joe sent shockwaves through the sports/culture landscape in May when he revealed to ESPN’s Highly Questionable that the athlete in Notorious B.I.G.’s I Got a Story to Tell was late Knicks forward Anthony Mason.

Though Puff Daddy later confirmed the story was true, Fat Joe felt awful about delivering the revelation.

“You know, I didn’t think it was a secret because I knew it for so long,” he told For The Win on Saturday after performing at a Mountain Dew NBA 3X event in Miami. “The honest truth is I never knew I was the ‘WikiLeak.’ I would have never exposed it if I knew nobody had known it.”

“I felt bad I offended Charles Oakley, who’s an idol of mine and Anthony Mason, who’s an idol of mine as well,” he added. “So anybody offended by saying that, by revealing that, I’m sorry for even saying that because these guys are guys I looked up to as well as being friends of mine.”

Here are a few other topics the die-hard Knicks fan covered in his chat with us.

What was your reaction to the Knicks trading for Derrick Rose?

I just hope he’s healthy.  When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best players on Earth. Is he better than Jose Calderon? Yes, a million times better, but I just hope he’s healthy. We haven’t had a real point guard in so many years. Now we have money to get Kevin Durant. I mean, why do we have Phil Jackson? The reason we got Phil Jackson and paid him all this money is because Phil was going to get all these big boys to come to New York. We need one of them.

You’ve helped pitch players on coming to New York in the past. Are you going to do the same with Durant?

I will definitely try. I don’t have a Kevin Durant number. If you could spot it to me, I’ll call him [laughs]. I might see him at the BET awards and harass him.

What would you say to him?

I wouldn’t embarrass myself publicly. If I saw Kevin Durant in the bathroom alone, I would beg him to death to come to the Knicks, like I did with several other players. [Chris Paul], he knows the real Fat Joe as a Knicks fan. It’s embarrassing. I’m a true Knicks fan, I watch them all around the world and I don’t miss a game.

Free agent center Hassan Whiteside is there at the NBA 3X event — are you going to say, “Come up to New York”?

If we had Whiteside right now, it’d be over. Dwyane Wade’s my brother, but … I honestly believe if [the Heat] had utilized Whiteside in the playoffs, they would have gone deeper. Every time they went down, I screamed, “Whiteside! Whiteside!” at the TV.

Are there any other sports mysteries in rap lyrics you can help clear up?

I’m done with mysteries, bro!
