Volkswagen set to reveal settlement details over emissions scandal

The Volkswagen Group is expected to file its $14.7 billion settlement with U.S. regulators and consumers in federal court Tuesday over the diesel cars it rigged with bogus software to cheat emissions standards. Owners of the 2-liter-engine diesel cars affected by the scandal will receive $5,100 to $10,000 in compensation. They can choose to either have their cars fixed or bought back to be repaired to bring them in compliance. In addition, the deal requires Volkswagen to pay $2.7 billion in fines and devotes another $2 billion to clean-emissions technology.

UK's Cameron to meet EU leaders in Brussels

British Prime Minister David Cameron will meet with European Union leaders in Brussels on Tuesday for the first time since the United Kingdom voted to leave the EU. The leaders of France, Germany and Italy said that no talks on leaving the bloc could be held until the U.K. invokes Article 50 of the EU treaty, which triggers the exit process. European Council President Donald Tusk said the EU is “determined to keep our unity at 27,” one less than when the U.K. is included. The U.K. voted on Thursday for a British exit, or “Brexit,” from the EU, and the referendum injected massive uncertainty into financial markets.

Deaf swimmer competes to qualify for Rio

Marcus Titus, who has been deaf since birth, will compete in Tuesday’s final of the 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. swimming trials in hopes of qualifying for his first Olympics. Titus, 30, would head to Rio if he finishes in the top two. He hopes his success will motivate younger athletes, sending the message, “If I can do it, they can do it too,” Titus said. This is Titus' third Olympic trials, and perhaps his last chance to fulfill the ultimate goal of making the Olympic team.

Congress still can't agree on a bill to fight Zika

More than four months after President Obama first called on Congress to pass $1.9 billion to fight the mosquito-borne Zika virus that threatens the continental U.S. this summer, the Senate is expected to vote Tuesday on a deal passed last week by the House — except the bill is unlikely to pass. Both Republicans and Democrats say they want to fund programs to eradicate mosquitoes, develop vaccines and protect pregnant women from the risk of having babies with severe birth defects, but the Zika money has become mired in controversial issues ranging from the Confederate flag and pesticide regulations to birth control and Obamacare.

NFL announces $10M in funding for coalition to stop sexual violence

The NFL on Tuesday will announce $10 million in funding over the next five years to a coalition of non-profit organizations working to prevent sexual violence. In the first phase of the donation to Raliance — the coalition between the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault and the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence — 27 grants worth $50,000 each will be awarded to a variety of organizations across the USA. The NFL first met with the NSVRC in 2014 amid heavy criticism for its handling of domestic violence incidents involving Ray Rice and Greg Hardy. The coalition hopes to provide the money local and national organizations need for victim services, education, research and prevention.
