Twitter to Texas, Florida: Your turn to exit
As news of the #Brexit vote blanketed social media, Twitterites used the opportunity to (seemingly jokingly) invite states to exit America.
Most of the buzz centered on Texas:
Then there was Florida:
But can a state really secede? As Timereported after secession talk bubbled up following President Obama’s reelection in 2012, not really.
The Constitution, which provides processes for new states to enter the union and for current states to divide or reconfigure, does not have a provision for states to leave the union. A state would have to leave by force — something Abraham Lincoln knew a lot about — since there is no legal basis it could point to for breaking away.
