40 must-see structures in Scotland

Scotland is a country famed for its dramatic landscapes, windswept beauty and abundant wildlife. Yet while it may be best known for its nature, Scotland also has a wealth of amazing man-made structures, from prehistoric settlements to medieval fortifications, Victorian monuments to modernist parliaments.

The powers-that-be in Scotland have decided it’s high time to celebrate their extraordinary architectural heritage, and have launched the 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design. This year, the country is hosting an array of events to celebrate the best of its man-made masterpieces. The main focus is the Festival of Architecture 2016, which is offering an extensive program of events and activities throughout the country, each of which will highlight and celebrate aspects of the country’s world-class architecture.

One upcoming highlight is the Ideal Hut Show, which began May 1. Eighteen ordinary garden sheds have been transformed and customized by world-leading architects, artists, designers and celebrities from Scotland and beyond. These huts will then embark on a roadshow throughout Scotland.

Another upcoming event is Out of Their Heads, an exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, beginning June 11. This exhibition will invite visitors to meet Scotland’s greatest architects, such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh, through their portraits and recreations of their best known designs.

Adventures in Space, meanwhile, is one for movie buffs. The curated event starts July 1 at the Lighthouse in Glasgow (itself a stunning building) from July, and will study the futuristic architecture seen in science fiction movies. From Metropolis to The Matrix, visitors will find films from the birth of cinema to today.

There are many more events planned too, lasting to the end of the year. You can find out what else is on during Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design at the official website: foa2016.com.

In the meantime, sit back and enjoy some of Scotland’s most iconic architecture in the slideshow above.
