Golf clubs used to be made entirely of wood before they transitioned to a wood head at the end of a steel shaft. Then companies started designing metal heads, which brings us to the point where we are now, filled with golf clubs featuring graphite shafts and composite metal heads that help golf pros hit the ball, at times, incomprehensibly far.

But some PGA Tour pros were handed — literally — a blast from the past on Wednesday at the Northern Trust Open when they tried hitting a few shots with some old golf clubs.

I’ve actually tried hitting clubs like these a few times before and it’s quite an interesting experience. I’d say it’s like hitting a golf ball with a cricket bat except not many people may have hit a cricket bat before, so think of what it’d be like to hit a golf ball with a big, hollow, heavy piece of wood. It’s virtually impossible to hit a shot straight unless you hit it right on the sweet spot, and it’s generally quite tough to get the ball flying in the air.

Not a great combination for most of us, but Jack Nicklaus mastered it pretty well.
