Tuesday's forecast: Storms, rain for Southeast

Severe storms will wallop the Gulf Coast Tuesday while most of the rest of the nation sees a quiet weather day.

Southeast: Heavy rain and a few severe thunderstorms are likely from Texas to Florida. The heaviest rain will be along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle. A chilly rain is likely in Texas and Oklahoma.

West: Most of the western third of the nation will be sunny and warm on Tuesday. The exceptions will be the Pacific Northwest coast and the Four Corners region, where some showers are expected.

Northeast: The Northeast and Great Lakes will be mild and clear. Some scattered showers are expected in Maine.

Weather history for April 28: In 1898, Washington, D.C., picked up a half-inch of snow, the city's latest measurable snow on record. In 1990, April record high temperatures were set in Buffalo (94 degrees) and Syracuse (92).

In 2002, a deadly F5 tornado hit La Plata, Md., the state's most powerful twister on record.
