10 best Super Bowl commercials of all time

So I don’t always love the Super Bowl. The game is often a letdown, like last year’s blowout of the Broncos by the Seahawks. What doesn’t let me down every year? Super Bowl commercials. They often feature animals in people clothes, which are objectively funny. Animals in people clothes!

While our friends over at Ad Meter have the 10 highest-rated Super Bowl commercials in history, here are my ten favorites:

10. Volkswagen: The Force (2011)

This is by no means a classic, but this ad from a few years ago holds a special place in my heart. The concept is perfect, yes, but it’s the details that make it a winner — the dad lifting an eyebrow, the tiny Vader’s stunned look at his parents, then perfect swing back to the car.

9. Pepsi: Cindy Crawford (1992)

This ad caught Cindy Crawford at its apex and probably made it cool to drink Pepsi.

8. Reebok: Terry Tate, office linebacker (2003)

Though it spawned a thousand imitations, this commercial felt shocking when it aired. I remember looking around the room when it went live, all of us in disbelief that they were showing this on TV. Bonus points for being one of the first Super Bowl commercials that everyone, and I mean everyone, watched online.

7. Nike: Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny (1992)

Four years after this ad aired, Space Jam was made. That’s all this needs.

6. Budweiser: Bud frogs (1995)

This commercial doesn’t hold up very well, but it’s concept is still gloriously simple and makes you remember the product, which I guess is the point of a good advertisement.

5. Career Builder: Monkey office (2006)

Those monkeys are wearing people clothes. Ha.

4. Coca Cola: Mean Joe Greene (1979)

I could take or leave this commercial, but the fact that we all still know what it is some 35 years later is a good sign that it worked.

3. Apple: 1984 (1984)

Apple’s “1984” commercial is holy writ for people who work in advertising, and I guess it’s “important” or whatever, but looking back doesn’t it just look like a deleted scene from a Terry Gilliam film? I guess that makes it one of the best commercials ever, but still.

2. Pepsi: Your Cheatin’ Heart (1996)

This ad still cracks me up. I have no idea why.

1. McDonald’s: Larry Bird vs. Michael Jordan (1993)

A basketball commercial made the biggest mark during a football game. I honestly believe this made the game “HORSE” that much more popular among my generation.
