'School of Rock' is Broadway bound, with ALW tunes
A new musical based on the 2003 film School of Rock is officially ready to rock on Broadway, with new tunes by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The stage adaptation of School of Rock — originally directed by Richard Linklater and starring Jack Black as a down-on-his-luck rocker who becomes a substitute teacher — will have its world premiere on the Main Stem, it was announced Thursday, with previews set to begin Nov. 2, 2015 in preparation for a Dec. 6 opening.
The show will feature music from the movie, as well as new songs composed by Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. Laurence Connor will direct, and the creative team will also include veteran pop producer Rob Navallo.
"It is a joy to return to my Jesus Christ Superstar roots — when Deep Purple's Ian Gillan was recording Jesus for Tim Rice and me at London's Olympic Studios, Led Zeppelin was recording next door and a glimpse of a Stone or two was routine!" Lloyd Webber said in a statement. "School Of Rock is hugely about how music can empower kids."
