The Redskins have benched Robert Griffin III, and on Sunday he’ll watch Colt McCoy lead the offense against the Colts. The Redskins’ decision to sit Griffin likely signals that his career in the nation’s capital could be quickly coming to a close, and although it isn’t likely that Griffin will land in Dallas in 2015, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones heaped praise upon the 24-year-old Wednesday on the NFL Network.

Via NFL.com:

“Well, I’m a fan of RGIII. Right on this field two years ago, or maybe it was three seasons ago, he put on a show and had a game that just floored me. And they won, and they won in large part because of his play at quarterback. I thought ‘my goodness, and we’re going to have to be playing this guy for years and years.’ And so he’s got it.”

Jones is referring to the Redskins-Cowboys game on Thanksgiving day in 2012, when Griffin threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns to lead Washington to a 38-31 win. You could argue that Griffin’s performance in Arlington that day was one of his two or three best games as a professional, and Griffin’s Redskins ended the season on a seven-game winning streak before falling to the Seahawks in the playoffs.

Since that game in 2012, Griffin has cracked 300 passing yards just three times in 18 games, and he’s never thrown more than three touchdowns in a single game. Still, Jones believes RG3 has that type of ability.

“Once you see a player do it, especially if you see him do it two or three times, you know he can do it. And of course he’s a driven young man. I’m a big admirer of RGIII.”
