Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader was helpless, unable to play.

“It’s more nerve-racking than playing,” he said. “It wasn’t easy.”

Out with a hand injury, Abdelkader was understandably frustrated when he was forced to watch the Red Wings on TV in Games 1 and 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“It’s really tough,” he said. “It wears on you as a player, especially when you want to be out there this time of year. This is what you play for, the playoffs. Not being able to be out there and help the team, it’s tough.”

But Abdelkader, who had a breakout 23 goals this season, will be back in the lineup tonight for Game 3 at Joe Louis Arena in this seven-game series that is tied 1-1.

A tough, big, physical presence, Abdelkader is just what the Red Wings need against the Lightning.

“My game is really suited for the playoffs,” he said. “Hopefully, I can help the team out. Be physical. Be on the forecheck. Be around the net.”

Getting Abdelkader back should give the Red Wings a needed boost, and it will allow coach Mike Babcock to split up Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk.

“Abby is a big body, an every-dayer,” Babcock said. “Abby is a competitor. He’s good at the net. He plays hard, he competes hard. I’m sure he’ll be ready to go.”
