Photos: (Genuinely) surprising celebrity splits

This photo contains two such examples. On the left, you have Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams, who announced their plans to divorce on Jan. 24. On the right, you have Rock and Rock Hall of Famer Neil Young, who filed papers to divorce Pegi, his wife of 36 years, in July 2014. They had two children and founded a school together.

Comedian Chris Rock has been open about the day-to-day struggles of marriage. He even based a film, 2007's 'I Think I Love My Wife,' on the concept. But it was still a surprise to hear he and his wife of nearly 20 years, Malaak Compton-Rock, were divorcing in Dember 2014. The couple had two daughters, Lola and Zahra.

Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins had been a Hollywood institution since meeting on the set of 1988's 'Bull Durham.' Though they never wed, they were together for 23 years and had two children together before announcing their split in 2009.

From the time they met on the set of 2001's 'Planet of the Apes,' director Tim Burton and actress Helena Bonham Carter were the king and queen of quirky celebrity couples. Like Sarandon and Robbins, they never wed but were regarded as an institution. As such, fans were surprised to hear of their split in late 2014. The biggest clue to Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's split might have been their sudden willingness to appear in photos together for the first time in 10 years of marriage. That happened right before she made her infamous "conscious uncoupling" blog post in March 2014. Perhaps they were offering a parting gift to celebrity photo editors, who otherwise would have forced to illustrate the divorce story with grainy paparazzi pictures and Photoshop collages.

Supermodel-turned-reality show host Heidi Klum and Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Seal were the poster children for integrated families. The couple began dating while Klum was pregnant with her daughter from a previous relationship. Seal adopted her and the couple went on to have three more children together before they finalized their divorce in late 2014.

Clint Eastwood, currently in the spotlight for directingAmerican Sniper, and wife Dina Marie Eastwood finalized their divorce in December 2014 after 18 years of marriage and a daughter, Morgan.

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton met as teenagers back in 1991, long before he was a famous singer or she was an actress. They were together for 21 years, married for nine and had a son before his personal problems led her to walk out. Thicke tried to get her back, even naming his 2014 album 'Paula' after her. No dice.She filed for divorce in October 2014.

Not a lot of relationships can withstand a reality show. Not even ones that spanned two decades, as Kardashian matriarch Kris and her second husband, Olympian Bruce Jenner found out. They divorced in September 2014 after two daughters, Kendall and Kylie.

'Rizzoli & Isles' star Angie Harmon met NFL player Jason Sehorn way back in her 'Law & Order' days. They divorced in November 2014 after three children (Finley, Avery, and Emery).
