Showing that good things come to those who wait, Rob Zepp will make his first NHL start on Sunday night.

The Philadelphia Flyers goalie is 33.

He’s getting the chance because of an injury to Steve Mason, who was hurt during practice on Friday. Usual backup Ray Emery was in net for Saturday’s 7-4 win in Toronto (Zepp backed him up) and with the Flyers playing back-to-back games, Zepp will get his shot.

He was drafted by two NHL teams, but never got above the American Hockey League before this season, outside preseason games.

He mostly toiled in the ECHL in the Carolina Hurricanes’ system before playing two seasons in Finland and seven in Germany.

The Flyers signed him to a two-way contract last summer, and he had gone 8-5-4 with a 2.70 goals-against average and .918 save percentage with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms before he was called up.
