A cool and showery day is likely Tuesday in the northeastern U.S., while rain and even some light snow is possible in the Rockies.

East: The Northeast, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley should see occasional rain on Tuesday. The heaviest rain is likely in New England and in western portions of Pennsylvania and New York State. The other soggy spot Tuesday will be south Florida and the Keys.

Central U.S.: Other than some morning fog in the central Plains, most of the central U.S. will be on the clear and dry side on Tuesday. Much of Texas will be hot, with temperatures soaring into the 90s.

West: Rain and mountain snow are forecast for much of the Rockies all the way from Montana to New Mexico. Along the West Coast, while California is sunny and warm, the Pacific Northwest coast will be windy and wet.

Weather history for Oct. 21: In 1957, a hailstorm hit southern California; hail drifts of up to 18 inches were reported in East Los Angeles. In 1996, a nor'easter pelted New England with 3-10 inches of rain and 30-80 mph winds.

In 2005, Hurricane Wilma made landfall in Mexico as a powerful Category 4 storm, with winds of 155 mph.
