Twitter explains why users see random tweets in timeline

If you use Twitter, then you may have noticed random tweets appearing in your timeline coming from accounts you don't follow.

It's part of a series of experiments run by Twitter to make timelines more interesting for its members, the social network revealed in a blog post Thursday.

The experiments focused on adding recommended tweets, accounts or topics to users' timelines to help make them more interesting.

"In many cases, the best Tweets come from people you already know, or know of," says Trevor O'Brien from Twitter's Product Team. "But there are times when you might miss out on Tweets we think you'd enjoy."

O'Brien says most people seemed to enjoy the addition of suggested tweets, based on testing. Twitter started quietly testing the feature in August.
