President Obama poses with the 2013 MLS Cup Champions Sporting Kansas City.

In addition to honoring Kansas City's championship soccer team, President Obama gave a shoutout Wednesday to the sports scene of the entire city.

The Kansas City Royals have made the baseball playoffs for the first time in 29 years, and the Kansas City Chiefs are much improved from years past and hammered the New England Patriots this week on Monday Night Football.

"So, clearly, something is going on in Kansas City," Obama said during a White House ceremony honoring the city's soccer franchise.

Sporting Kansas City "got the ball rolling" last year by winning the Major League Soccer championship, Obama said.

The president also praised another proud Kansas City product, White House press secretary Josh Earnest.

"It's a pretty good day to be from Kansas City," Obama said. "You guys are kind of cocky right now."
