Chilly temperatures will overspread much of the central and eastern U.S. Thursday while more rain drenches the Northwest.

East: A cooler, drier day is forecast Thursday for most of the East. Some showers are possible around the Great Lakes and interior Northeast, and a few thunderstorms will rumble in central Florida.

Northwest: Heavy rain will again soak the sodden Pacific Northwest on Thursday.

Weather history for Oct. 30: In 1985, heavy rain from Hurricane Juan soaked the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida. In 1991, frigid air dropped temperatures far below zero in the northern Rockies; Butte, Mont., hit -23 degrees.
