Well, that didn’t take long.

U.S. national team captain Clint Dempsey kicked off the American World Cup campaign by scoring a left-footed goal 29 seconds in the opening game against Ghana. (FIFA originally clocked the goal at 34 seconds, then revised the number to 29.)

The goal came after a quick through ball from Jermaine Jones. Dempsey took the ball, beat his man inside, then fired in a left-footed shot low to the opposite corner. It was a dream start for the Americans.

During the national anthem, Dempsey did not make any expression, and looked totally determined. He made good on his intensity early.

U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann and the American bench could barely contain their excitement.
