At the Villa Maria Retirement Community in Grand Rapids, Mich., residents are in training for an upcoming 5K.

The leader of the pack is 100-year-old Gladys Misiewicz.

"Guess how many mornings a week I go? Always," she says of her exercise routine.

Up at 4:30 each morning, Gladys takes part in every exercise class offered at Villa Maria.

"My life has been filled with exercise and good nourishment," she said.

Gladys says she owes part of her longevity to growing up in the Great Depression without a car. "I've walked all of my life," she added.

And she doesn't seem to be short on ways to encourage other residents to get moving.

"I go to them and I say, 'You know, we have an exercise program available to us -- it's just downstairs. Get off the seats and come down with me,'" Gladys explained.

As for how she feels to live this long, her answer is simple: "I'm blessed and I thank God every day for my blessings."

Gladys is among the 17 residents at retirement community taking part in the Heels to Heal 5K at Grand Valley State University on Saturday.
