'Best American Riverfront' chosen by readers
Our readers apparently love a great riverfront and have shown it with their votes. Our recent 10Best Readers' Choice contest for Best American Waterfront was one of the most popular contests to date, and lovely Wilmington, N.C. came out on top.
Four weeks of heated voting - with fans of Wilmington, N.C. and Spokane, Wash. passionately jockeying for the top slot - culminated with a win for the charming North Carolina city on the banks of the mighty Cape Fear River. In the end, and with 33% of the total vote, Wilmington topped beautiful Spokane, which scored 28% of the total votes. Both make fantastic destinations for travelers who love the water and an inviting downtown.
Filling out the top five winner slots are two Iowa cities - Davenport and Dubuque - as well as Pittsburgh, where the Allegheny, Ohio and Monongahela Rivers converge.
