Polar bears drive Halloween inside for Canadian kids

Polar bears have caused a northern Canadian community to cancel its outdoor Halloween celebrations.

In Arviat, Canada, it's not Halloween season.

It's polar bear season.

An influx of polar bears has caused the northern Canadian community to cancel its outdoor Halloween plans this year, reports CBC News.

Yes, that means no traditional trick-or-treating for about 1,200 kids, who will instead get to trick-or-treat and visit a haunted house hosted at the local community hall.

This is the first time the community of Arviat has had to cancel Halloween, but bears have been a mounting concern during annual fall migration and as shore ice depletion at the Hudson Bay pushes the bears closer to the town.

The town has a polar bear monitor, and has received funding from the World Wildlife Fund Canada for a "Conflict Reduction Project," which includes an electric fence.
