Lightning recall winger Jonathan Drouin

Tampa Bay Lightning winger Jonathan Drouin's NHL season will finally get under way as he has recovered from a broken thumb.

He was injured during rookie camp and missed all of the main training camp.

He was recalled on Sunday after a two-game conditioning stint in the American Hockey League in which he had a game-winning goal and two assists.

He won't make his NHL debut in Edmonton, but is expected to later in the team's trip.

Drouin, 19, was drafted third overall in 2013 but was sent back to his junior team in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After recording 108 points, he was considered a preseason candidate for rookie of the year.

But he has a lot of catching up to do to get into the race.

Los Angeles Kings winger Tanner Pearson has five goals and seven points in six games, and forwards Andre Burakovsky (Washington Capitals) and Filip Forsberg (Nashville Predators) are averaging a point a game.

Defensemen Stuart Percy (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Damon Severson (New Jersey Devils) are averaging about 20 minutes a night.

The Lightning also recalled defenseman Luke Witkowski, No. 1 defenseman Victor Hedman is out four to six weeks after breaking his finger while blocking a shot.
