Avalanche lose two goaltenders to injury in a day

Colorado Avalanche goalie Reto Berra was injured during Thursday's game in Ottawa.

The Colorado Avalanche started the season with a tandem of last season's winningest goalie and a rising backup.

Now, they're down to their third- and fourth-stringers after losing two goaltenders on Thursday.

During the afternoon, the team placed goaltender Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve with a groin muscle injury.

Then during Thursday night's goalie Reto Berra left the game in the first period after Ottawa Senators forward Kyle Turris, checked by Colorado's John Mitchell, crashed into him in the crease.

Calvin Pickard, called up on Thursday, went into the game and gave up four goals on 27 shots in his NHL debut, a 5-3 loss to the Senators.

The Avalanche on Friday recalled goalie Sami Aittokallio, who has 40 minutes of NHL experience.

There was no update Friday on Berra. If he can't go during Saturday's game at the Montreal Canadiens, Pickard will get the start.

Varlamov's IR move was retroactive to Tuesday, meaning he can be activated a week from that day.
