Chiefs' Jamaal Charles heads to camp after striking new contract

Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles led the NFL with 19 TDs in 2013.

Jamaal Charles' standoff with the Kansas City Chiefs didn't last long.

The sides agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension Wednesday, and Charles was headed to training camp with the rest of the Chiefs' veterans, two people with knowledge of the negotiations told USA TODAY Sports.

The extension raises Charles' compensation from $3.9 million to $8.3 million in 2014 and includes $18.1 million in new money, according to one of the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn't been announced.

Charles, 27, had two years and $9.9 million left on his old deal. So, he's now signed through 2017 and due $28 million total.

Minnesota's Adrian Peterson is the only running back set to earn more ($12 million) than Charles in 2014.

Charles was one of football's best bargains last season, when he made $3 million, gained 1,980 yards from scrimmage and scored 19 touchdowns, most in the NFL.

The Chiefs were about $9.4 million under the salary cap as of Wednesday morning, per NFL Players Association records.

"I had no intention on holding out...I just ran out of gas on the way to camp and my cell phone battery died," Charles joked on Twitter. "It was a long walk I tell ya."

The Chiefs hold their first training camp practice Thursday afternoon in St. Joseph, Mo.
