Stars might have to look at a new backup goalie

When the Dallas Stars entertain the Anaheim Ducks tonight, local fans have every right to be envious of the goaltending depth they see in the visiting dressing room.

The Ducks have two impressive young netminders in Frederik Andersen and John Gibson. Last night, Gibson started for the Ducks and now the Ducks can come back with Andersen today.

Pleased with their No. 1 goalie Kari Lehtonen, the Stars went out this summer and signed Anders Lindback to provide him with what they believed was a high-quality backup.  But Lindback has unsettlingly poor numbers (4.58 goals-against average and .850 save percentage) in his first two starts.

It’s an alarming situation for an intriguing Stars team that is hoping to take their improvement to another level this season. Quality teams must get points from their backup goalies.

If Lindback doesn’t look sharper in his next couple of starts, GM Jim Nill might have to explore other options. Veterans Tomas Vokoun and Ilya Bryzgalov are available.

Other goalie situations to watch:

-Brian Elliott is No. 1 in St. Louis, and owns an impressive 1.98 goals-against average. But Jake Allen shut out the Ducks last night and has given up four goals in three games. He’s a threat to steal Elliott’s net at some point.

-The Senators are rotating Robin Lehner and Craig Anderson and are getting strong results.  No reason for them to change, although Lehner seems ready to be a No. 1.

-With two shutouts in his past three games, Marc-Andre Fleury has a better goals-against average (2.13) and save percentage (.926) than his career averages. GM Jim Rutherford has said he wants to re-sign Fleury.

As you ponder this, consider these factors. 1. There are no good goaltending options in the free agent market next summer.  2. The Penguins could use a hometown discount from Fleury to give themselves cap flexibility moving forward. 3. Fleury is a very likeable guy, popular with his teammates.
