Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta also had cancer surgery this season.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta's tough year got even worse with confirmation Friday that he has the mumps.

But the Penguins got good news when backup goalie Thomas Greiss and defenseman Robert Bortuzzo tested negative. Both had been held out of Thursday's win, although Marc-Andre Fleury was able to play after he tested negative.

Maatta is the third Penguins player to be diagnosed with the contagious disease, joining captain Sidney Crosby and forward Beau Bennett. Crosby returned Thursday night and played more than 20 minutes.

Maatta also had surgery this season to remove a cancerous thyroid, missing six games, and is currently out with an upper body injury. He also had offseason shoulder surgery.

He remains in isolation, the team said.

His case raises the number of NHL players affected by the mumps this season to 16.

New York Rangers forward Lee Stempniak is being tested, along with Rangers minor leaguer Joey Crabb and Hartford Wolfpack coach Ken Gernander.
