Punchlines: In Washington, a resignation and a lawsuit

USA TODAY
Seth Meyers

One of the most talked about events out of Washington yesterday — the resignation of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. His reason for stepping down is not entirely clear. When President Obama announced the resignation he stated that Hagel doesn't make these kinds of decisions lightly. But, according to a USA TODAY report, Hagel may have been pressured to leave.

The late-night comics had their own theories. One explained the departure as Matt Lauer striking again. Another said it was Hagel's penchant for making odd statements in public that got him the boot, a theory that had Vice President Joe Biden nervously packing, the comic said.

Other hot Washington topics taken on by last night's late-night comics: a Supreme Court case and an Affordable Care Act lawsuit.
