BEREA, Ohio – The Cleveland Browns quarterback competition is underway.
Rookie first-round pick Johnny Manziel made an anticlimactic entrance — no money hand sign, yet — to his first practice in front of a sold-out crowd of about 4,000 fans, many wearing Manziel’s No. 2 jersey.
Though it was clear Manziel was the main attraction here, veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, who grew up in nearby North Olmsted, also has his fans, a small group of whom chanted his name early in practice.
The crowd was fairly docile for the first hour of practice. That all changes when the first set of team drills began — with a Hoyer play-action completion to Miles Austin.
The depth chart will remain like that for at least a few days, and head coach Mike Pettine has already decided that Hoyer will start the preseason opener Aug. 8 at Detroit.
