Urban Meyer opens up on his health problems at Florida: 'I thought I was dying'

Urban Meyer enjoyed incredible success at Florida, winning 65 games including two BCS national championship games and the 2009 Sugar Bowl — but the stress from the job forced him away from the game for two years. Meyer, who was taken to the hospital after the 2009 SEC championship game for chest pains and took a leave of absence prior to the Sugar Bowl that season, spoke about his difficult time at Florida on HBO’s Real Sports, revealing that he lost 37 pounds in a single season.

Via ESPN:

“You start thinking, ‘There’s something wrong with me mentally, you know? What is going on here?’…. I thought I was dying. Mentally, I was broke.”

Meyer would leave Florida after the 2010 season and spend some time as an analyst for ESPN before taking over the Ohio State coaching job in 2012.

“I was in a panic situation. We just won it. We got to do it again. I close the door. And I started just recruiting. One of my friends came and said, ‘What are you doing?’ He said, ‘Enjoy, what’s wrong with you, man? Enjoy this.’ I tried.”
