Premiere: Holly Williams covers Bruce Springsteen

Holly Williams is among the artists contributing to "Dead Man's Town: A Tribute to Born in the U.S.A.," out Sept. 16.

The granddaughter of Hank Williams covers Bruce Springsteen's No Surrender on a new album paying tribute to The Boss' 1984 album Born in the U.S.A.

Holly Williams' version of No Surrender, premiering at USA TODAY, will appear on Dead Man's Town: A Tribute to Born in the U.S.A. The album, out Sept. 16 on Lightning Rod Records, also features Americana acts like Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires, Justin Townes Earle and Apache Relay reframing Springsteen's songs.

No Surrender was the first song on the second side of Born in the U.S.A. If Springsteen's original came on like a blast of youthful defiance, Williams' down-tempo version comes from reserves of quiet, determined strength.

"It's always intimidating to do a cover of anyone else's song, especially when it's written from one of the greatest living songwriters of our generation," says Williams, who has released three albums, most recently 2013's acclaimed The Highway. "All I can say is I was incredibly honored to be asked to be a part of this tribute to The Boss, and I really hope he is pleased with the outcome."

Dead Man's Town marks the 30th anniversary of Springsteen's classic album, which was released June 4, 1984, and yielded hit singles like Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days, My Hometown and Cover Me. It was Springsteen's most successful album, certified 15 times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
