Miley Cyrus' VMA date turns himself in to Oregon jail

SALEM, Ore. — Jesse Helt, a homeless man who accepted a VMA award for singer Miley Cyrus last weekend, turned himself in to the Polk County jail Thursday night.

Sheriff Bob Wolfe said Helt, 22, turned himself in at the Polk County Community Corrections in Dallas, Ore., on an outstanding warrant for probation violation and was booked around 8:30 p.m. PT.

Wolfe said bail was $25,000 and he was allowed to post 10 percent of it.

"He came into the jail with that on him," Wolfe said.

Corrections Director Martin Silbernagel says Helt will be expected to appear before a judge in about two weeks.

Helt, a former West Salem High School student, was thrust into the national television spotlight by Cyrus.

He was selected by Cyrus to give an acceptance speech for her after she met him at My Friend's Place shelter for homeless youths in Los Angeles last week. The shelter encourages homeless youth to build self-sufficient lives.

He accompanied Cyrus to the MTV Video Music Awards last Sunday night and spoke about homeless young people when he took her place at the podium following her win for her "Wrecking Ball" music video.

It's not clear whether Cyrus knew that there were warrants for his arrest in Oregon dating to November 2010. They relate to criminal trespassing and mischief charges and failing to comply to probation community service and urinalysis requirements. An Oregon eCourts record shows that he owes the county more than $2,000 in costs.

His mother, Linda Helt, confirmed to the Statesman Journal on Monday that the singer had given her son money to return to Oregon. When local law enforcement showed up at Helt's home, Jesse Helt was not there. It's uncertain where he's been since he left his mother's home.
