A man shot a woman and then himself in a Chicago Nordstrom store Friday night in what appears to be a domestic incident, police said.

Officers responded to a reported shooting at 8:30 p.m. CT and two gunshot victims were found at the scene, News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro told USA TODAY.

The alleged shooter, 31, shot his girlfriend, 22, a seasonal employee at the department store, before fatally shooting himself.

"She was working up on the second floor when he approached her, fired one shot, which struck her," John Escalante chief of detectives for the Chicago Police Department told the The Chicago Tribune. "He then turned the gun to himself and shot and killed himself."

The man was found dead at the scene and Chicago Fire Department paramedics transported the female victim to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she is in critical condition.

When shoppers heard the gunshots a panic ensued and one woman described a "stampede" on the store's escalator, The Tribune reports.

None of the store's customers were threatened and no other injuries were reported.

The Nordstrom location will be closed Saturday, according to a notice on the store's website.
