Royals catcher impresses umpires with Victoria's Secret perfume

You might assume catching nine innings in mid-summer heat would leave a Major League catcher smelling foul. But that’s only because you haven’t had the pleasure of standing near Salvador Perez while he’s behind the plate. He smells incredible.

Stop what you’re doing and watch Perez’s interview with Christa Dubill of KSHB Kansas City. The whole thing is utterly delightful, but the clear peak comes when Perez volunteers the fact that umpires like him because he wears perfume.

“The umpires? They’re awesome. They’re all my friends. I use perfume, I don’t know if you guys know that. But I use perfume, and all the umpires like that. Sometimes Victoria’s Secret.”

Dubill then asks Perez what he’s wearing during the interview. He holds out a massive hand for her to smell, and she asks if it’s Chanel. He laughs and confirms that it is.

“I learned that from (Royals shortstop) Alcides (Escobar), because every time he plays, he uses Victoria’s Secret. So one day I said, ‘Alcides, let me try it.’

“In the first inning, the umpire says, ‘You smell good, Salvy.’ I said, ‘Thank you.’ And that game, I hit a ball and everything, so I started to use it every day. Now I use Victoria’s Secret every time.”

OK, so that all makes sense. You make the umpire’s life a little more pleasant, maybe he hooks up an extra strike or two on the corners.

But wait, why was Alcides Escobar wearing Victoria’s Secret perfume during baseball games? No judgments or anything; Alcides Escobar should express himself however he pleases. It’s just… why?

For more from Perez on the Royals’ hot streak, his best friends on the club, and some other superstitions, watch the whole interview.
