Things aren’t looking too good for Florida State.

In the last 10 years, no team that has been ranked No. 1 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll has won the national championship. Southern California would have been an exception in 2004, but that title has since been vacated as a consequence for NCAA violations.

USC came close again in 2005, starting the season as a preseason No. 1 in this poll, but Texas beat the Trojans in the national championship that year. Ohio State came close too. The Buckeyes were No. 1 in 2006, but lost to Florida in the title game.

If any team is happy to not be at the top, it’s No. 2 Alabama. The Crimson Tide have won the national championship three times in the last five years and not one of those years did they begin at the top of the poll.

2009: Alabama was No. 5

2011: Alabama was No. 2

2012: Alabama was No. 2

The coaches voted Alabama preseason No. 1 in 2010 and the Tide went 10-3, and again in ’13 and the Tide went 11-2. So Nick Saban is probably pleased with this preseason poll.

If Jimbo Fisher is a fan of statistical poll history, he probably isn’t.
