Tracy Morgan hits back at Walmart

Tracy Morgan, shown in 2012, has issued a statement hitting back at Walmart.

Tracy Morgan is speaking out against Walmart after the company blamed him for his own injuries in a car crash involving the comedian's limo bus and a Walmart truck earlier this year.

In court papers on Monday, Walmart claimed that Morgan's injuries were "caused, in whole or in part, by plaintiffs' failure to properly wear an appropriate available seat belt restraint device."

Morgan has responded, placing the blame for the accident squarely on the company. In a statement emailed to USA TODAY, he said:

"After I heard what Walmart said in court I felt I had to speak out. I can't believe Walmart is blaming me for an accident that they caused. My friends and I were doing nothing wrong. I want to thank my fans for sticking with me during this difficult time. I love you all. I'm fighting hard every day to get back."

While Morgan said he and his friends "were doing nothing wrong," he did not say specifically in the statement whether or not he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Walmart released an updated statement on the crash and lawsuit Tuesday. In a statement emailed to USA TODAY, Walmart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said:

"Walmart is committed to working to resolve all of the remaining issues as a result of the accident. As part of the ordinary course of legal proceedings, Walmart filed an initial response yesterday to the lawsuit that included facts and defenses that may impact the case moving forward. While we were required to respond to the lawsuit, we have also taken steps to encourage settlement discussions. Our thoughts continue to go out to everyone involved, and we remain committed to doing what's right."

Morgan and three others were severely injured in the six-car pile-up on June 7, and one fellow passenger, comedian James McNair, 62, was killed.
