Philadelphia Eagles considering long-overdue switch to kelly green uniforms

It’s been almost 20 years since the Philadelphia Eagles ditched their classic kelly green uniforms for a darker shade. Could the team be going back to the future?

Team president Don Smolenski was asked about a potential change while on the WIP Morning Show on Wednesday and confirmed that a change could be in the works.

“We have talked about it and there are some rules with the NFL that provides some restrictions that we’re trying to work through, but that’s going to take some time. It’s there, and it’s something that we do talk about, but until some things change at the NFL level it’s going to provide restrictions for us. It is being talked about it, yes.”

There sounds like some pandering in that statement, as it satisfies both sides of the jersey aisle. And it’s hard to imagine the NFL would stop the Eagles from going traditional, provided the team went through the usual, lengthy process of altering its uniform. But, hey, at least the Eagles are talking about going back to the future, a move that would please any and all sartorially inclined football fans.

The team’s main color is now called “midnight green,” which is sort of like calling something “ocean purple.” When the Eagles switched to the new uniforms in 1996, the look felt sleek and modern. It hasn’t aged well.

The current unis aren’t bad, mind you. (The downward facing Eagle logo is the worst part.) They’re perfectly acceptable, except when compared to the beauty of the old kelly green jerseys, the ones that bring back memories of Chuck Bednarik, Dick Vermeil, Ron Jaworski, Randall Cunningham, Buddy Ryan and Reggie White. As long as no one makes the pun about Chip Kelly’s team wearing kelly green, this change should be a no-brainer.
