The Queen sends her first tweet

The Queen tweets at the Science Museum on Oct. 24, 2014, in London.

It's a moment for the history books.

Queen Elizabeth II sent her first tweet on Friday.

The message went out at 11:35 a.m. local London time to some 724,000 followers of the @BritishMonarchy account. It explained why she tweeted:

"It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R."

(R stands for "Regina.")

The account is, of course, managed by palace officials.

But the queenly tweeting came about as Science Museum Director Ian Blatchford remarked on how the Queen has harnessed advances in communication technology throughout her reign, reports The Guardian.

He then invited her to send her first tweet. She removed her glove so that she could press the button.

The question many are asking now: Should we call it a "queet"?
