According to various reports, Rory McIlroy ended his relationship with Caroline Wozniacki in a surprise three-minute phone call during which the tennis star thought her fiancee was kidding.

Neil Harman of London’s The Times opened his article about Wozniacki’s French Open loss by describing how the world No. 13 was still seeking answers about why McIlroy ended the relationship:

“[…] The last time he called, less than a day after telling her how much he loved her, it was a three-minute conversation she thought was a joke.”

Christopher Clarey of The New York Times didn’t put a length on the call, but heard something similar.

So much for McIlroy’s claim that the breakup was “mutual.”

The golfer received a lot of heat last week when he revealed that he got cold feet after sending out wedding invitations. “If you didn’t want to get married, why did you ever let it get this far?” was the constant refrain. Though it’s a fair question, can’t everyone agree it’s far better to end the relationship six months before the wedding than six months after?

There’s not as much understanding for a phone-call breakup. It’s understandable that it’s almost impossible to coordinate a breakup with McIlroy playing tournaments on two continents and Wozniacki being planted in Paris for two weeks during the French Open. We won’t know the particulars of the relationship and breakup, nor should we. But from what we have heard (and perception is all that matters), it’s not a good look for Rory.
