5 reasons the San Jose Sharks are on the verge of a sweep

The San Jose Sharks have a chance to finish a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Kings tonight and you have to like their chances.

In the first round, no team in the Western Conference has looked sharper, more dynamic and more confident than the Sharks. The Montreal Canadiens are the only Eastern Conference team to sweep its series.

Here are five reasons why the Sharks should make it four in a row:

Goals galore

The Sharks are averaging 5.67 goals per game over the first three games. That’s almost a touchdown per game in an era when three goals constitute a barrage.

All aboard

Eleven different players have scored, an indication of how balanced the Shark attack has been. The Sharks are getting strong play from all four lines. Everyone is on the oars, paddling in the same direction.

Matt Nieto has more points than Joe Thornton.  How does LA deal with that?

High predictability

This is not a team getting hot. They have played consistently well for most of the season.

They are quicker, deeper and more efficient than Sharks teams of the past.

Overwhelming numbers

The Sharks are averaging almost 38 shots a game, and they have been the second-best 5-on-5 team in the playoffs. Meanwhile, they are clicking at better than 20% on the power play.

Kings aren’t right

Although the roster is similar, the Kings aren’t playing like the one that won the Stanley Cup two seasons ago.  Jonathan Quick’s save percentage is .852. That says it all.

The Kings aren’t blocking enough shots.  The Sharks are closer to matching them in hits than you would expect.  The Kings are second in the postseason and the Sharks are fourth.

The Kings haven’t been hard to play against like they were in 2012.  They have been leaky defensively.

Also tonight

Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg is a game-time decision. He has been out since the Olympics. … Minnesota’s Matt Cooke will begin serving his seven-game suspension. Colorado will be without defenseman Tyson Barrie, who was hurt by Cooke’s knee-on-knee hit.
