The Broncos started the Super Bowl terribly

It wasn’t the start Denver wanted.

On the opening offensive play of Super Bowl XLVIII, Broncos center Manny Ramirez snapped the ball over quarterback Peyton Manning’s head and the ball then went out the back of the end zone for a safety.

Manning appeared to step forward to communicate something to his offensive line, and while he was leaning forward, Ramirez snapped the ball. Manning never had a chance to grab it.

This is now the third Super Bowl in a row that a safety has happened. In Super Bowl XLVI, Tom Brady was called for intentional grounding in his own end zone on the first offensive play of the game. Last year, Ravens punter Sam Koch ran the ball around in the end zone and eventually went out of bounds to kill time in the last minute in their win against the San Francisco 49ers.

The safety meant big money for some aggressive gamblers, as the money line on the first score being a Seattle safety was +4000 in some Vegas prop bets. (Not one million to one, as Mark Cuban tried to trick America into believing.)
